Week 38 – The Way We Were

The Way We Were
Barbra Streisand
Songwriters: HAMLISCH, MARVIN

Memories,
Like the corners of my mind
Misty watercolor memories
Of the way we were.

Scattered pictures
Of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were.

Can it be that it was all so simple then
Or has time rewritten every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again, tell me would we?
Could we?

Memories,
May be beautiful and yet
What’s too painful to remember
We simply choose to forget
So it’s the laughter
We will remember
Whenever we remember
The way we were.

  1. Hi Elizabeth. Thanks for subscribing to my blog. I haven’t been through the pain and readjustment of a divorce, but have been through the death of my husband. So I sympathise/empathise with you and send you all good wishes from this side of the world hoping to help you through the next few months. 🙂

    • Thanks. My draft post included details of ‘the way we were’ (as a couple) but at the last minute I cut out the things about my own situation because; firstly, it upset me too much; and secondly, I felt that the song said it all.

      • That’s sad. I’m sorry to hear that. I think most of us can really relate to that song and the movie. I am the Barbara Streisand character in that movie, take it or leave it. 🙂 I hope things are looking up or at least will be soon.

      • Thanks, yes things are looking up a bit. It is a bit of a roller-coaster but gradually the dips are not quite so low. I am a bit behind in my writing and i will replay some more positive news soon. 🙂

    • Thanks for the nomination. I am most humbled and truly appreciate you following my blog and your supportive comments to me.

  3. I love “The Way We Were!” The song and the movie were particularly poignant while I was divorcing my first husband, the first love of my life. He was my college sweetheart, husband and the ten years we were together were bittersweet, since he also, sadly, was an alcoholic. Not a friendly or funny drunk, either. We tried counseling and we really tried the last two years to ‘change’ to fit who he had become. I went to Al-Anon meetings and he kept drinking. I gave up after a fight where my five year old daughter witnessed his mean streak. My son was only 2 and a half years old, so we continued family counseling with play therapy together for another six months. It helped me to get stronger. I feel I ‘saved’ my kids heartache over the long haul… Hugs, Robin

    • That must have been a tough time. It is so sad that we cannot change those whom we love. You had much courage for taking your children out of that environment and giving them a stable loving caring upbringing. I admire you.
